Task 2

Interview Skills

Some of the basic interview skills you should know are, to always make eye contact, take a note of the interviewers name, bringing a list of references and to make sure your mobile phone is switched off.
Make sure you come well prepared by looking up and revising the kind of questions you will be asked and to be aware that you are trying to sell yourself in an effective way. Be aware that in most interviews questions will be asked to test your skills as they’re trying to get to know who will be working for them, so make sure you’re prepared for those questions.

Beforehand, you should research online about the Boss who will be interviewing you. For example, previous awards they may have won or the job positions they’ve had. It is good to come with a friendly and warming vibe and if there are any awkward silences, complimenting their hair style or a photo on their desk or making a light joke could be a good way to break it. During your interview you should really try to get to know the Boss and try and see if they’re always playing the professional role or if they enjoy a bit of light banter. If you both share an interest/connection make sure you mention it as you’re aiming for them to be your potential boss.

Always make sure you know the background of the company you are applying to work for. Researching about the company you’ve applied to work for shows that you’ve showed an interest into their business in specific as they’re wary of the people who are looking for any job they can find.

Along with researching about the interview skills look up the companies dress code. The way that you present yourself will be analysed closely and you will be judged on your appearance. Ask around to find out the dress code for the company you could do this by going there personally and asking the person who works at the front desk. If you know it is casual, plan to dress in a professionally casual form and if it is formal (depending on the company dress code) plan to wear a suit.

Example, casual:

Black or a darker shade of jean works well with a blouse for casual interviews. Try avoiding hoodies, casual t-shirts, low cut tops and if you were to wear a skirt, it should be above the knee as it will look unprofessional.

Example, formal/smart:
